This is wonderful, and so well timed for me. I just had a teacher conference about my very young child's temperament, and that temperament is very much one that loves peace and quiet.

What can I say? She's my girl.

Thank you for such a thoughtful and powerful post.

Awesome suggestions, Heather. Once I got past the fact that the inbox is not a to-do list, life got easier. And I love the 5 verbs.

Thanks Michelle, sometimes looking at what we want to change in the "here and now" helps motivate us. Thanks for following the blog.

In keeping with the theme-- I LOVE this!

1-- is a great goal and so true, For anyone who has achieved this, They know it's about balance.

5-- Eisenhower said, "planning is invaluable, plans are worthless". Thus working the plan means having the flexibility to quickly adapt to changing conditions.

7-- it takes a confident leader to allow others the latitude to solve problems they know they could solve. In Jeff Jarvis's book, "What would Google do?" one of his main points is that trust and control are inversely related; i.e., the more control you give up to your people, the more trust you get from them. It's counterintuitive, but so true.

Also, from my professional military education, I learned that other's solutions may not be as effective as yours, but they will usually be more readily accepted, and therefore more effective in the long term. They will also result in pride of ownership and growth of those responsible for the work. All of which makes for a stronger team.

Thanks for the great blog posting.
