It’s something I’ve known for quite some time now, but this past week, I got a clear reminder about what leads to having a fulfilling life – which includes a fulfilling career.
The event that occurred last week was the launch and release of a new book written by Patti Johnson, the CEO & Founder of PeopleResults. The book is Make Waves: Be The One To Start Change At Work And In Life.
It highlights the important steps that individuals at any level can take toward positive change. By reinforcing readers’ desires to contribute and make a difference, Patti addresses how an individual can put ideas and desires into actions necessary to make them a reality.
One aspect of the book launch event was that I was able to see and reconnect with many people I worked with at Accenture as well as clients I’ve supported. It was so wonderful to share memories of our work together and reflect on the many good times as well as the challenges that we managed through together.
It also prompted me to think about how many people we connect with and impact in our lives … without even realizing it.
It was one of those experiences where you had so many people from your past in one room and that room was filled with positive energy.
So here’s the “secret” and mantra I’ve shared millions of times to my sons … it’s about the journey, not the destination!
I know of many people who have obsessed and worked tirelessly to achieve that all-important promotion, career milestone or financial goal only to achieve it and find themselves asking … “Is that it? Is this what I’ve worked so hard for?”
Life is unpredictable and honestly, you never know if this could be your last day on earth. So why not tackle each day with that CARPE DIEM (aka, seize the day) attitude?
So here’s my tips on leading a fulfilling life:
- Enjoy what’s happening in the moment! Don’t spend all your time thinking about the future or the past, but really take notice of what is happening right now! Your awareness of the subtleties of your surroundings will expand exponentially and you will begin to find joy in the small, simple things of life.
- Celebrate the small pleasures/victories each day. It’s an attitude of gratitude that can make all the difference in how you view your world and be thankful for your blessings. Focus on what you HAVE vs. what you HAVE NOT! Take time to acknowledge your progress made along the way. Don’t expect others to pat you on the back … pat yourself on the back!
- Do something that gives you a sense of achievement and enjoyment each day. When you can do this, you will have a balance in your life that offers happiness. The amount of time we spend at work and at home ebbs and flows. This balance goes beyond the # of hours spent at work vs. our personal lives. Do something for yourself that makes you happy and do work that makes you proud … every single day!
While last week’s book launch was highlight event, it was really the culmination of celebrating the journey along the way. The relationships built, experiences shared, lessons learned and a time to recognize what a fulfilling ride it’s been along the way.
Patti is a role model in this way and it was evident by the number of people showed up for her to celebrate the accomplishment of completing her book. She enjoys her journey and so can you!
